VELLUM

BETH DOWNING AND JASPER JORDAN-LANG

Considering truth, fiction and encryption, Vellum draws on historical texts such as The Voynich Manuscript, and Hildegard von Bingen’s Lingua Ignota. Vellum frames historical forms of linguistic abstraction through contemporary phenomenology, speculating on the meaning of everyday mundanity through comparison with the historical sublime inherent in the mythological connotations of the texts examined. An articulation of the artists’ understandings of their surroundings, Vellum is a coded description of personal, visual interpretations of the present, through the past.
