On New Years Eve 2019, the township of Mogo on Yuin Country was affected by devastating bushfires on New Years Eve 2019. This fire has hit the local Aboriginal community extremely hard with not only the loss of homes of vulnerable community members but also the loss of the Mogo Aboriginal Land Council Building. Tributary volunteers have been communicating with Linda Carlson, CEO Mogo Local Aboriginal Land Council about their loss, including the destruction of significant cultural artefacts and artworks, as well as the Art Gallery which is run by the Land Council.
The Fire Relief (Fun)draiser auction event will directly donate to the Mogo Local Aboriginal Land Council, which represents a critical intersection of Aboriginal cultural and nmatural resource management in Yuin Country. Not only does the organisation support families in the township of Mogo, but also surrounding localities such as Broulee, Mossy Point, Batehaven, Malua Bay and Tomakin. The Land Council provides culture, art and education programs, alongside a range of cultural and environmental services and represents an important source of employment to local Aboriginal community members.
In addition to the financial donations, Linda Carlson has also asked us to help with the supply of art materials for the local artists who have lost their art materials, studios and artworks. A portion of funds raised in the auction will be used to purchase art materials for the community. Following the auction, members of the Tributary Board of Directors will arrange a visit to meet community members in Mogo and deliver art materials. Financial donations will be transferred to the Mogo Local Aboriginal Land Council in support of their call for donations for Land management resources and funds to rebuild their centre. See web link below for more information about fundraising efforts for the community centre.
