This exhibition considers the aesthetics of the digital in our global age. The surface of each work can be read as contested site between an image and its material support, in which the formal qualities of a medium are emphasised as an index of production. These works dither between material and sign, medium and content, history and immediacy and as evidence of physical and digital procedures. The relationship between an image and the actuality of its medium is presented here as both struggle and collaboration, the subject matter of each being at once the content of an image and the process of that image’s appearance to the viewer.

As an organising principle, Exo provides a strategy with which to situate disparate works in relation to one another, and allows for the integration of techniques associated with ‘low art’ into practices of ‘high art.’
