Elsewheres is a group exhibition exploring the tensions of place in a multi-centred society. Presenting the works of Jessica Bradford (Sydney), Lani-Shea-An (Canberra), Jiehao Su (Boston-Beijing), Stephanie Winarto (New York), and Poyen Wang (Taipei-New York), the exhibition is informed by Lucy Lippard’s seminal book The Lure of the Local (1997), where the selected works also navigate senses of locality in the context of ever-changing urban spaces and globalised landscapes. Curated by Annette An-Jen Liu, Elsewheres brings together works across the disciplines of graphic design, painting, sculpture, photography and video that speak to questions of belonging, memory, hybrid cultures and overlapping histories. While the five artists also share Asian heritage, they work in contemporary visual languages that does not particularly draw from aspects of traditional Asian aesthetics, as their creative practices are not primarily defined by their cultural identity.
This exhibition is supported by Tributary Project’s 2019 EASS Exhibition Award.
