CAR is Angus McGrath’s first solo exhibition, and wallows in the connection between fetish culture and cars. Both are focused on  "sexy" visual styles, utilise many of the same materials (leather, rubber), the mechanic as a masculine porn stereotype, etc. Beyond associations though, both place a focus on a “body”; made, contorted, and presented as useable objects. JG Ballard’s 1973 novel Crash and David Cronenberg’s 1996 film adaption are narrative examples where these two worlds explicitly meet, and extreme sexuality plays out as inseparable from cars. CAR inhabits an ambiguous space, somewhere near Crash, utilising photography, textiles, found objects and sound.
